While no one really knows all the reasons behind our unique fingerprints, there are advantages to having them. One of the biggest advantages of our fingerprints lies in the fact that they are ridges. Because our fingers are ridged instead of just smooth, we are able to have a better grip on things that we hold.

Fingerprints or "Dermal ridges" are small raised ridges on the surfaces of human fingers that increase friction between the fingers and objects. The reason for this is to enable humans to pick up very slippery objects with relatively little effort, if humans had completely smooth fingers it would be very difficult to hold onto things like hard boiled eggs.

Humans evolved fingerprints because fingerprints make it easier to grip objects. Our ancestors once had smooth fingertips, a feature that made it difficult to grip objects, especially when wet. Fingerprintes fixed that problem.

Fingerprints serve the simple function of assisting with grip. Without then the skin of our fingers would be too smooth to easily hold on to things, especially in wet or slimy situations.

Fingerprints are made of ridges of skin. The ridges create vibrations when your finger is rubbed across a surface. The vibrations stimulate the nerve endings in your fingers which allow you to feel textures. Without the ridges of our fingerprints we wouldn't have a tactile sense.
