Normally, no one puts a salt block out for deer. Farmers will put them out for cattle and the deer are attracted to the salt licks. Hunters may also put salt blocks to entice the Whitetail deer to certain areas of a property in order to shoot the deer.

I put out a salt lick in early spring (first week of March for the deer) Deer need calcium and phosphorus from the salt licks for growth of antlers and fawn.  add a comment

To many animals such as deer, moose and other equestrian animals such as a horse use salt blocks for licking. Salty flavors are appealing to animals and are licked as a treat.

Deer need the salt in their diet and crave it. It is a gift to deer, like leaving them dried corn.

They attract the deer and have them returning to the same location. This is beneficial for hunting purposes because the location of the deer are known.
