Why do they call it the "Home Depot"?

Those words don't seem to make sense together.

Depot is derived from a French word which means warehouse or storage facility. Therefore using the name Home Depot for the store, indicates that it is a place that contains and stores items related to a home.

It's a very large store (a depot or warehouse) that's filled with items you can use in your home. Thus, the Home Depot. It's actually pretty common for hardware stores like Home Depot to try to market themselves as related to homes. For example, there's a Canadian hardware chain called Home Hardware.
