The Cleveland Browns do not have brown helmets! The reason the helmets they wear are orange is because the Browns hosted their spring and summer training camps at the practice facilities at Bowling Green College. To honor the college of Bowling Green. They use Bowling's colors.

They originally wore white helmets for day games and orange for the night games. The NFL restricted the use of light colored helmets to be worn at night.

That is just the colours they choose (brown and orange). They are called the Browns after their original owner called them that (his name was Paul Brown).
