The Cleveland Browns got their name from one of the most influential players in all of sports- Jim Brown. Because he was such an influential player (and a great one) the team officially adopted the name "Browns".

The Cleveland Browns were named from the result of a newspaper contest which was started by former owner Arthur McBride. The winner of the contest chose to name the team after current head coach Paul Brown who reluctantly accepted.
