Why do rock stars always dress funny?

Rock stars who play large venues often need larger-than-life costumes in order not to be washed out by the lighting, hence all the sequins and bright colors. Some also have to accentuate their sexuality onstage in order to sell more records.

i think they just wear what they want... its all of us that try to fit into what we think are the expectations, so we all fall into standard patterns. if you really didnt care, then you would probably dress differently - thats what rock stars do.

Rock stars dress funny because they want to look like unique individuals. They also want to give themselves stage presence which they won't get in a suit and tie. They also get a lot of attention for their wild looks.

Whether or not rock stars always dress funny depends on how you classify a rock star. Some people think Britney Spears is a rock star, and she does dress 'funny'. But if she's a rock star, is James Taylor a rock star? He does not dress funny at all.

Every generation has to distinguish itself, and for the last three or four generations, this has been through the styles of their rock stars. In the sixties, rock stars wore hippie clothes. Punk stars began wearing torn clothing and safety pins to differentiate themselves from previous musicians. The purpose of all this is to annoy the preceding generation.
