Smelling fuel inside the passenger compartment could indicate a fuel leak in the lines, the fuel delivery system or even the fuel tank. It could also indicate an exhaust leak anywhere in the exhaust system form the exhaust manifold to the tailpipes. It could also be caused by having more fuel in the combustion chamber than can be burned or ignited.

Was the fuel freshly refilled? Sometimes this can cause the interior of a car to smell like gasoline. Also check to make sure the carburetor is properly adjusted to make sure the fuel is not being delivered too thin or too rich. A primary cause could be a leaky fill up at the gas station though.
