Turn steering wheel a little bit before you turn the key to turn it on. Extreme angle of wheel when car was off could be cause of it getting stuck.

In general a repair like this isn't easy for someone considers themselves a "novice". If you consider yourself this, you should consult your user manual or call your local mechanic.

Place the key into the ignition and turn the steering wheel to the left or right in order to release any pressure. The key should turn.

Try turning your steering wheel a little before you turn the key over, it may be stuck because of an extreme angle on wheel when the car was turned off.

You will know if your ignition is locked if the steering wheel will not move in any direction. Also, you cannot start the car unless the wheel is freed.
