Knocking in a plumbing system is cuased by thermal expansion. Some homes are built with a air space between floors and certain times of the year you will hear knock due to the piping expanding.

A knocking sound in your pipes comes from air inside your pipes as well as pipes not being tied down (e. g. clamped to a wall).
