A plumbing snake is a term applied to a tool that is made of spring steel that is inserted into the pipe until it pushes the clog through. Larger, motor-driven snakes are required for main line clogs. These snakes normally have a cutter on the end to help clear roots. Toilet has to be removed to use a snake.

Get a roto-ruter tool (called a snake) and run it from stand pipe where you have pulled a commode from it's affixed position in a bathroom.

You need a snake. There are larger snakes for toilets and smaller ones for sinks. You put it down the drain and turn it until it gets the clog.

When you are about to snake plumbing. it really depends on where the back up is. Once you have that in mind you should start at the loset point of the residence. Usually a snaking involves removing the toilet, and inserting the snake at that point. be safe a snake is powerful.
