Babies do not usually fight sleep, babies just seem this way since parents do not know what they truly want. When a baby needs to sleep he/she needs to be comfortable and relaxed for this to happen all needs should be provided by the parents for a baby to sleep.

Babies try to fight sleep because they are too excited learning about their world! They don't want to stop exploring for a second.

Some professionals believe that fighting sleep is actually a baby's way of working off additional energy before sleep sets in. Also, sometimes the discomfort that comes with gas or reflux can make it difficult to fall asleep, making it appear that the child is willing himself to stay awake.

Babies fight sleep because they don't want to miss anything. They are taking in huge amounts of information and their brains are constantly pushing for more, more, more. Any time spent sleeping, to the baby's way of thinking, is time not spent learning about the world. Sleep is vital for processing all that new information, so stick to a routine.

It could be because they have too much going on around them or it could be that they have some sort of discomfort. If there is something going on it around them they would rather focus on that then try and go to sleep. They always want in on the action.
