Running puts three times your body weight on your joints, which is a lot of pressure for your joints to handle if they're not used to it. Always start out slow, 10-15 minutes at a time and work your way up, so to reduce stress on your joints.

If you've allowed your leg or ankle muscles to atrophy through inaction, neglect, or self-mutilation, it will take time for you to regain stamina and tone that will support your weight while you exercise. Have your doctor determine your BMI to see if you are grossly overweight.

it may be because of past injuries like if you twisted your ankles or something. you might be a little old or heavy to run then.

Joint impact that naturally occurs while running. The force of your feet hitting the treadmill runner travels up your legs until absorbed by your body. Better shoes with shock absorbance or using an elipical machinen instead is suggested. With elipticals your feet never leave the surface and so you are doing the exercise without the impact.
