If your child used a bottle during the night or even soon before sleep after teeth had erupted, this would cause bottle mouth. The mouth does not form sufficient saliva to clear the sugars in milk, breastmilk or formula, and this will cause cavities. If your child has soft enamel, it can be caused by one occurrence.

When toddlers are allowed to fall asleep while drinking from a bottle, the natural bacteria in their mouths interact with the sugars in the drink and cause tooth decay. Reawakening and drinking again and again intensifies the problem.
