They are not just plastic. They have a rubber edge that keeps the rain off your window. They are expensive because some handle snow and ice better than others and some have a rain guard.

Well the blades themselves are made out of rubber and the arms are made out of rubber. The can cost quite a bit for ones designed to work for quite a long time. Most only work for about a year. The rubber is probably the most expensive part since a lot of development is put toward designing them.

Shop around on the internet. They often go for 2.00 a blade for the 10.00 blades in the store.
