Drugs are administered orally, through injection (into a muscle or under the skin) or directly into a vein (IV). Each method affects the absorption rate and efficacy of the medication. IV fastest into the bloodstream, but not all drugs are formulated for IV use.

Some, can reach the body more quickly than others, like through the blood when required. Other things have to reach deeply like into the muscle. Some things are just under the skin(subquateously). Depending on requirements of the treatment (speed, severity ect...) a medication will be selected that can best meet the needs.

Sometimes you may need a cream to help with arthristis pain because of where the pain is located and sometimes you can take a pill that helps more with real deep ache. Sometimes they may give you an injection that will help with more immediate relief as will the cream. All drugs are that way different methods for different needs.

Drugs are formulated to be given orally, through injection into a muscle, an injection under the skin, or through an IV. The medication, its purpose and the desired effect determine how it will be given.
