It seems to be that theirs not a story behind the traditional, "red wagon". Most people say it might always be red because in many stores red paint is the cheapest to be able to afford to paint something that size.
The first wagon invented was called the "Radio Flyer" was red when it was invented, and the creators probably thought it looked unique, so they thought that red would be an ideal color for a wagon.
