Guitars have the shape they do to maximize acoustic resonance and offer the user a comforatable instrument at the same time. Although most guitars have the same basic "8" shape, many variations exist which will produce different tones.

Guitars are shaped the way they are to allow for the right amount of balance both when strapped on your shoulder and when balanced on your knee. Additionally, acoustic guitars must have sound holes to allow the soundboard to vibrate properly, producing the acoustic sound.

Acoustic guitars are shaped to produce certain tones when played. The shape of the body affects the sound. Electric guitars can be shaped in any design because they don't depend on the acoustic chamber to produce sound.

Electric guitar's shape is mostly based on ergonomic/aesthetic criteria. Acoustic guitar's shape is a compromise between ergonomic and acoustic requirements. Wide for a loud full sound and in a kind of pear shape for playing comfort.

They have evolved into that shape from original more boxy shapes because this shape manages to meet conflicting requirements in a balanced fashion. The classical guitar has a rounded shape and long neck to fit the human form and a smooth hollow body to produce the best tone and volume.

Honestly? With electric guitars, male sexuality usually. I've personally had guys compare the shape of their guitars to the shape of my body using the word "curves".
