The Union won the battle of Vicksburg. Union forces staged assaults on May 19 and May 22, 1863, but were repulsed by the Confederates. General Grant then settled in for a siege, which lasted from May 25 until July 4. Vicksburg surrendered the day after the Union victory at Gettysburg.
