Anti-federalists were afraid of giving the people too much power and wanted a republic instead of a democracy. They didn't want a direct democracy.

Anti-Federalists did not want the Constitution ratified. They did not want to give the federal government that much power. They were afraid that the position of the President could become more like a monarch, if the federal government were given that much power. Anti-Federalists supported giving states more power.

The Anti-federalists were proponents of strong state governments. They were against a strong central government. Their agenda was to limit the power of the central government. They did not want a strong president for fear that he could act like a monarch. They feared that a strong central government would attack their liberties and were thus opposed.

Anti-federalists opposed ratification of the Constitution for two main reasons. One, it failed to include a bill of rights to protect the rights of individuals and two, they felt it gave too much power to the national government and not enough power to the states.
