Probably one of the most famous abolitionists was Harriet Beecher Stowe, whose book Uncle Tom's Cabin helped stir abolitionist sentiments in the North. Additionally, John Brown, who led a raid on the arsenal in Harpers Ferry, was an abolitionist.

Perhaps the most famous would be John Brown who died prior to the Civil War but was credited/blamed by many for sparking the crisis. Brown was a religious man who sought to lead a slave uprising. He felt slavery violated God's will. His raid at the Federal Arsenal at Harper's Ferry was unsuccessful and led to his execution.
