Gettysburg is the most famous battle of the American Civil War. There the North defeated the South at a critical time when President Lincoln looked like he might lose the next election. The battle of Vicksburg effectively cut the South in half. Sherman's March was a series of battles that broke the illusion that the South could defend its territory.

Gettysburg in Pennsylvania was a major conflict in the Civil War. Some others were Vicksburg in Mississippi, First Bull Run and Antietam in Virginia. Chickamauga and Chatanooga were majors conflicts in Tennessee. There was a major battle in Atlanta which is in Georgia and this was followed by Sherman's March to the Sea.

The Battles of Manassas (or Battles of Bull Run) are very famous. The Battle of Gettysburg, Vicksburg, the siege of Richmond, are all also very famous.
