Without a doubt, I have had the best luck with Sharpie brand permanent markers. For darkness and staying power, they are practically impossible to beat.

Sharpies are definitely the best permanent markers, in black as well as in colors. Sharpie is the expected ink for signing autographs because of its durability. The brand now makes various points, including fine all the way through a big, wide one as well as retractable markers.

The only black permanent markers i've had success with are the Sharpie brand ones. The ink does not run or leak through pages too bad!
