Ousmane Sembene, who died in 2007, was a Senegelese writer and pioneering filmmaker. Starting in 1956, he published novels, including "God's Bits of Wood" about the struggles of common people against colonialists and home-grown elites. Starting in 1963, he began making films, many in Wolof, dealing with life's difficulties for ordinary people, and the corruption of the local elites.
