The Who, The Beatles, The Grateful Dead, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers Band, The Band all could be considerd "kings of rock".

My best guess is Elvis. He changed the rock world that we live in today. He died very young and I know that might also have a lot to do with it.
