The President has few specific enumerated powers according to the US Constitution. Veto power is one of these powers granted to the president and the ability to veto legislation signals executive authority. The veto cannot be overturned unless by two-thirds vote in the senate making a presidential veto a tool of authority that is hard to override.

Use of veto power by a President does mean executive authority. But one of the great safeguards is the ability of the Congress to override that veto. So that while the President has executive authority, it is not a total authority. This was a very smart measure put in place that makes our country great.

The President is the top of the executive branch, as opposed to judicial (federal courts) or legislative (congress and senate),branches. The three parts of American government have authority only over specific areas of government. Any lawful power the President exercises is executive authority, including the veto power.
