Question by  Tattoorick (17)

Which step can be omitted from a gram stain without affecting the determination of the gram reaction?

Or is there one? If you could skip a step, why would it be included in the first place?

The only step that can be omitted per se is the rinsing with alcohol, however that step is combined with the third step. After dying with the purple stain, the red stain is sometimes combined with the alcohol to make the process go a little more quickly.
