If the question is which format is better to use, then you would use the one that your recording device instructs you to use. If it calls for +, then use +. If it calls for -, then use -. However, if you are asking which brand, then I recommend Maxell Gold DVD-R. They work best with my dvd recorder/vcr combo.

If you have a dvd burner that you purchased more recently than 2006 + and - will not matter. If it is older check your burner's requirements for a preference.

If it is for "someone-else": Use older DVD-R and/or DVD-R/W discs. Older DVD-R and/or DVD-R/W discs play on more older-players, which might not recognize the newer DVD+R or DVD+R/W discs. If it is for "yourself": Use newer DVD+R and/or DVD+R/W discs. Newer DVD+R and/or DVD+R/W discs last-longer and play more-reliably on newer-players, which recognize the newer DVD+R and/or DVD+R/W dics.

The best dvd to record into is a +r disk. So the answer would be a + as the best choice.
