The word guitar can trace its' roots all the way back to the Persian word 'tar' which means string. However, the closest relative is the Andalusian Arabic word 'qitara' which gave birth to the Spanish term 'guitarra'.

It comes from the Latin or Greek word "cithara" which refers to the the lyre (of Biblical fame) family of instruments which are somewhat similar to the guitar. Kithara is actually the Greek word used today to refer to a guitar. Not surprisingly, Spanish and French have very similar-sounding words for guitar.
