Gray squirrels are found in the mixed hardwood forests throughout Maryland, as well as in the suburban and urban areas. They prefer to live in forests with mature, nut producing trees, especially oak and walnut. They build nests in natural cavities and woodpecker holes in trees out of leaves and twigs.

Gray squirrels are very common in temperate climates and live all over the east and midwest of North America. They live in forests, but also have ventured into cities and human populated areas as scavengers. They are often confused with the fox squirrel in the far west and Canada, because of their similar coloring.
