Verses (Revelation 20:13-15) in the Bible states people not in the Book of Life will be thrown into the lake of fire. Additionally, Mark 9:43 states getting rid of what causes you to sin is better to be thrown into "hell where the fire never goes out".

Because the area where the bible was written is surrounded by desert. That was one of the greatest fears of the time and was transferred over to the religion.

The Jews always believed in Hades ( a place of burning and torment for sinners in the afterlife ) and Jesus told a parable about the rich man and Lazarus where the rich man who had led a sinful life was in torment in the fire of hell and begging Abraham for relief because he was in agony.

The false belief in a burning forever started soon after the Flood by the Babylonia, the Eygptians, and other pagan nations. After Jesus and disciples died, the false belief of burning infultrated in to Christian teachings. By fifth century this false teaching was rampant.
