Magnesium rods are used as Anodes in most water heaters, and should be readily available at most plumbing suppliers. Look for commercial plumbing contractors in your area.

Metal manufacturers and distributors could sell you a magnesium rod or two. Scientific equipment and supplies vendors could be helpful as well. Aerospace vendors unload a lot of that kind of stuff and could sell you rods. Purity of metals is an issue in science experiments and research, so maybe your first stop should be scientific supply shops.

Depending on the size and diameter for the experiement, I would suggest a fishing store, a chemical store, even camping stores.
