In 1944, The Seagram Company introduced the spiced rum under the name Captain Morgan Rum Company. The rum's ingredients include aged raw rum with medicinal herbs and spices added to it. Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum was not introduced to the United States until 1984. It is now the second largest brand of Spirits in the United States.

Captain Morgan Spiced Rum may not have been too popular in the late 70s, so very few liquor stores would have carried it then. It is recorded that it came out sometime in 1950's.

You don't remember because it wasn't introduced in the United States until the mid-80's. Since then it has become one of the most popular rums in the United States.
