When someone gets shot why does the bullet travel in and out of the wound and back in again?

If the bullet is low caliber, say a 22, the low velocity causes it to bounce around and do far more damage than a higher velocity shell. Even with higher power bullets, it can bounce off bones, creating a ricochet effect in the body- far more injurious than a 45 which will blast right through leaving a large exit wound.
