Basically you call in and tell them your car was damaged. They determine if it's worth it to salvage the car or not. You cannot choose if it's salvageable or not, it's up to them. However, you can choose to buy the car off the insurance company and fix it on your own time with your own money.

There are salvage options with most companies, but you will likely get less of a pay out on your claim and you will get a salvage title on the vehicle.

On vehicle total losses, it depends in what state you reside. Some states allow you to keep the salvage, which the value will then be deducted from your overall settlememnt.

If you are referring to auto insurance, then in short, yes. However, this is dependent on which state you are a resident. Some states will allow you to retain your salvage if you are willing to have the salvage value deducted from your settlement.
