Life begins at the moment of conception when the sperm fertilizes the egg. The embryo then develops over a 9 month period. Abortion is the interruption of the process in which the development of the baby is interrupted and the baby is taken out of the womb prematurely and put to death.

The question of when life begins varies with people's various opinions. Many people believe that life begins at birth when a newborn takes it's first breath. At the other end of the spectrum, many believe life begins at the moment of conception. The Supreme Court view of life is it happens at the point of viability, 28 weeks in gestation.

Some people believe it begins at conception, some believe it begins at birth, others believe everything in between. This is the root of some of the abortion controversy.

_Life_ does not have a specific begin time; there is an unending chain of life all the way back to whatever the first organisms were, millions of years ago. The question that one should ask is when does _personhood_ begin.
