Ax is for cutting things like wood in half. Wood splitting mauls can be used any time you need to split wood that is stubborn otherwise.
Answer by Amber40 (24961)
Mauls are used whenever the piece of log is too wide to be easily split by the axe blade. It can be used to halve and quarter the log into more manageable pieces. Then you can use the axe to split them even more.

You should use a maul for fatter wider pieces of lumbar. An ax is used once the wood has been chopped into a more manageable size.
