I have used dry food coloring to color sugar that I use for decorating cookies, cakes etc. I have also used it with shredded coconut, again to decorate cookies, cupcakes and cakes. I have also used dry food color mixed with salt to coat margarita glasses. I cook Indian food and have used it decorate pilafs.

Really it is up to you. The main benefit of dry is that it won't water down whatever you make. It is also much more vibrant in color.

One thing to remember is that dry food coloring used to tint frosting will become darker over 24 hours....so you may want to save some white frosting to add to your tinted frosting if it gets too dark. A little dry coloring goes a long way!

A good time to use dry food coloring is when you do not want your food to be liquid. You can even use the color for differnt projects at home.

Dry food coloring is usually a powdery substance that comes in a pouch. You use it almost the same way you would liquid food coloring, the exception is that you may have to mix the power with the food, so remember to apply the dry food coloring before baking the food.
