In legal terms, the right to vote was granted to African American men in 1870, passed as the 15th Amendment to the U. S. Constitution. However, this was not fully realized until the Civil Rights Movement occurred between 1955-1968.

The amendment allowing African American's to vote was ratified on February 3, 1870. The practice wasn't realized until over a hundred years later. White women were given the right in 1920 after a long political battle.

Technically African-American men got the right to vote in 1870 with the 15th Amendment, but various new laws like the poll tax effectively kept them out of the voting process. Women got the right to vote in 1920 with the 19th Amendment. Of course that is in the US. New Zealand was the first to give women suffrage in 1893.
