It came from england around the 1200's. IT was used to grade the type of silver known as sterling, because it had 92. 5 weight of silver in it, due to 99. 9 weight is too soft to work with.

The US started using the hallmark for silver of 925 in 1868. They may also be marked with the hallmark of "sterling" to mean the same thing.
