Nylon stockings were first introduced to the public in 1939 at the New York World Fair. It was presented not to scientists but to a woman's club. Researches at Du Point had wanted to create a synthetic alternative to silk and came up with nylon.

In 1939 DuPont exhibited the first Nylon stockings at the World's Fair in New York. World War II saw the rationing of nylon for the war effort, leading to decreased public consumption that did not pick up again until several years after the war.
