Mercury came out with the Thunderbolt in the early 1970's. It was the leader in speed for these types of engines at the time, going a whopping 136 mph! After this was introduced, Mercury continued to break records in this kind of engineering.

When Muscle Cars started to get popular, Ford introduced a special edition of their Fairlane, called the Thunderbolt, in 1964. Only 100 of them were made, they were considered a "factory experimental" vehicle. It had a 427ci V8 with dual Holley 4-barrel carbs. Weight was reduced with fiberglass body panels.
