You may be able to see the gender as early as 11 weeks, but to be on the safe side, I would wait until atleast 18 or 20 weeks. At that point it should be much clearer.

An abdominal ultrasound can see a fetus at about the same time that the mass of cells becomes visible to the human eye.

Some physicians will perform a vaginal ultrasound before or right at twelve weeks but it may not be very clear. See if you can get one about mid 2nd trimester.

Well, typically, you don't go in for your first visit until 8 weeks, and it is visible at that time, though you won't be able to find out the sex.

They generally aren't worth getting one until 16-20 weeks since you can tell both the gender of your child and he will finally be big enough to see in detail. Most doctors won't allow one until 20 weeks because they want to wait until the baby is almost fully developed. They can see any birth defects at this time.
