What's wrong with a Toshiba that shuts itself off and the screen goes green with lines?

Sounds like this laptop is seriously damaged after having been shocked like droped on the floor or shacked... The green lines on the screen are a screen connection problem but also probably some LCD malfunction. If it shuts off by itself that could be because the CPU is getting too hot ; check the temperature into the BIOS.

It could be any number of things: the motherboard, lcd screen, or power supply. You should get in touch with Toshiba, especially if you're under warranty.
