Boys are much more shy than you realize, and fear rejection. If you think this boy likes you, talk to HIM, not in a flirting way, but as one human being to another. Show him you like him as a person and let nature take its course. Good luck.

Be assertive. Confront him (in private) with what his friend said and ask him if it's true. If he denies it, don't worry about the loser any more. If he says yes, then you need to decide if you want to try dating him or not.
