Ice applied to the area is the first choice. You may have to take some form of over-the-counter pain medication for the pain. Make sure you stay alert and watch for symptoms of a concussion.

To prevent swelling and brusing apply an ice pack. Place a towel over your ice pack before applying to the goose egg. Monitor the goose egg's size and color. If any persistant pain, discoloration or change in appearance occurs, seek medical attention.

The only real treatment is to ice the area for 20 minutes immediately after the hit and then take tylenol or motrin for swelling.
