Lots of things can cause sharp pains in the neck. Muscle strains can feel sharp to some people. If it's really sharp, there might be a pinched nerve somewhere. See a doctor if it persists or bothers you. See one immediately if the pain moves into your arm.

Persistent neck pain can be an indication of cervical spurs and impingment on a nerve. Cervical spondylosis is another condition that can cause this pain. Get x-rays or CT scan.

Many times when you have sharp neck pain it is caused by a nerve pinched in the neck. Usually though the pain will travel down the neck into your arms or back if this is the cause. A pulled muscle or a disc probably can also be the problem, so it takes some looking into.

A sting by a bee on the neck would cause a sharp pain. Or someone who suddenly does a karate chop on the neck from behind would also be painful.
