This could be a bruised lung or a fractured rib if you have had any sort of trauma recently(fall, bump, etc). If it is a deeper pain, then it could be some sort of bronchial infection. If the pain has been there for a while, or if it continues, you should definitly see a doctor.

The typical symptoms of chest Pain are:
Chest “tightness,” “squeezing,” or “heaviness.” People describe this feeling as a weight or as a band being tightened around their chest. The pain is usually located on the left side of the chest above the bottom of the ribcage, but it’s often hard to define its exact location.
Shortness of breath. Sweating, nausea, and an anxious feeling.A pain in the left arm, neck and jaw.  add a comment

The likely answer is that it's just a cramp in the muscles between your ribs. You may feel the pain when breathing in or out and then it goes away.

You could have several different problems if you are having pains in your left side. Go to your local emergency room and get an x-ray to make sure nothing is broken.

It sounds like you have pluracy in the left lung or have pulled a muscle. However, a doctor should diagnose this as it can be caused by various things and could indicate something more.
