The pump running dry or almost dry would cause noise. If the pump is working too hard or if something in the pump is broken. For example if the pool pump is running dry it will often make a ticking or slapping noise.
If the pump is just making a grinding noise and doesn't seem to be flowing any water; chances are the motor is seized due to running it without water flowing.
