What were the working conditions in the 1800s?

If they were bad, why were people healthier overall?

Working conditions varied worldwide, but if we are talking about post-industrial revolution Europe and America working conditions were very harsh in factories (and involved child labor. In fact people were not healthier overall. The average lifespan was far shorter then, especially for the working class.

During the 19th century most men worked an average of 84 hours a week, making around 1,70$ a day. The condition were dreadful and breaks were almost unknown, there wasn't any extra benefits and given the kinds of jobs people had, mostly manual labor, many workers suffered from work-related injuries.
