In Colonial America, there were no modern sewer systems like we know today. Basically, they had an open sewer system which amounted to little more than gutters in the streets. The townspeople would empty their sewage receptacles directly into the streets. As you can imagine, this was not the most clean or hygienic system.

Pre-revolutionary America didn't really have any sewer systems to speak of, unless you count pouring it into the streets and rivers as a system.
